Check & Clean
Dental problems can develop quietly, without causing pain until they become more difficult to treat. Regular dental visits help identify problems early and keep your teeth and gums healthy.
At Jaffar Dental, we take the time to properly assess your oral health rather than simply giving your teeth a quick clean.
For new patients, Dr Kevin begins with a thorough consultation to check your teeth, gums and overall oral health, discuss any concerns and explain anything that may need attention. X-rays may be recommended where needed. If appropriate, a professional clean may also be completed at the same visit.
For our regular patients, ongoing check-ups allow us to monitor your oral health over time, often making your routine visits simpler and more affordable.
What Happens at a Check-Up?
Dr Kevin will:
* examine your teeth and gums
* check existing fillings, crowns and other dental work
* look for decay, cracks or areas of wear
* assess your gum health
* check your bite
* discuss any pain, sensitivity or other concerns
* take X-rays when clinically required
* recommend a professional clean where appropriate
If anything needs attention, Dr Kevin will explain what he has found and discuss your options with you.
New Patient Consultations
If you are visiting Jaffar Dental for the first time, your initial appointment is generally focused on getting a clear picture of your dental health.
Dr Kevin will thoroughly examine your mouth, listen to any concerns you have and explain any issues he identifies. X-rays may be taken if they are required to properly assess your teeth.
You will then be given a clear idea of any treatment that may be recommended and, where appropriate, a treatment plan so you can decide how you would like to proceed.
Depending on your individual needs and the time available, a professional clean may also be completed during your appointment.
Why Are Regular Check-Ups Important?
Many dental problems are easier to manage when they are found early.
Regular visits can help identify:
* early tooth decay
* gum disease
* cracked or weakened teeth
* worn or failing fillings
* excessive tooth wear
* areas that are difficult to keep clean
Regular patients also benefit from Dr Kevin being able to compare changes in their teeth and gums over time rather than assessing everything for the first time at each visit.
How Often Should I Have a Check-Up and Clean?
For most patients, we recommend a dental check-up and clean every 6 months to help maintain healthy teeth and gums and identify any changes early.
Some patients may benefit from more frequent visits. If you tend to develop heavier plaque or tartar build-up, have ongoing gum concerns or require more regular professional cleaning, Dr Kevin may recommend appointments at shorter intervals.
Your recall schedule will be based on your individual oral health needs.
Does a Dental Clean Hurt?
For most patients, a routine professional clean is comfortable.
If you have sensitive teeth, tender gums or a heavier build-up of tartar, some areas may feel more sensitive. We work carefully and encourage you to let us know if you need a break or are feeling uncomfortable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need X-rays at every appointment?
No. X-rays are taken when they are clinically required. Dr Kevin will recommend them based on what needs to be assessed, your dental history and how recently previous X-rays were taken.
Is a check-up and clean different for a new patient?
Yes. A new patient appointment generally includes a more comprehensive initial consultation so Dr Kevin can become familiar with your dental health, discuss any concerns and identify existing problems. X-rays may also be required.
For regular patients, we already have a history of your dental health and can continue monitoring any changes over time.
Will I always have my teeth cleaned at the first appointment?
Not necessarily. The initial priority is making sure Dr Kevin understands the condition of your teeth and gums.
If a clean is appropriate and can be completed at the same appointment, it may be done then. If other treatment or more extensive cleaning is required, Dr Kevin will explain the next steps.
What happens if you find something wrong?
Dr Kevin will show and explain what he has found and discuss the treatment options available.
Where treatment is required, we can provide a treatment plan so you understand what needs to be addressed and the expected costs before proceeding.
How much does a check-up and clean cost?
The cost depends on what is required at your appointment.
New patients generally have an initial consultation, which allows Dr Kevin to thoroughly assess your dental health and discuss any concerns. Additional costs may apply if X-rays or a professional clean are required.
For regular patients, routine appointments may cost less because we already have your dental history and are continuing to monitor your oral health rather than carrying out a full initial assessment.
We will explain any additional costs before treatment is carried out.
Eligible private health insurance claims can be processed through HICAPS, and Humm payment options are also available for eligible patients.
