Children’s Dentistry
Dental visits can feel unfamiliar or overwhelming for children. Our aim is to make each visit calm, positive and easy to understand, while helping protect their teeth as they grow.
At Jaffar Dental, we take a gentle, patient approach with children and explain things in a way they can understand. We want them to feel comfortable in the dental chair, become familiar with seeing a dentist and build healthy habits early.
At Jaffar Dental in Waterford West, we provide gentle children’s dentistry in a calm, family-friendly environment.
What Does Children’s Dentistry Include?
Depending on your child’s age and individual needs, appointments may include:
* dental check-ups
* professional cleaning
* fluoride treatment where appropriate
* monitoring how the teeth and jaws are developing
* checking for tooth decay
* X-rays when clinically required
* tooth-coloured fillings
* extractions when a tooth cannot be saved or needs to be removed
* advice about brushing, diet and oral hygiene
* treatment planning if any problems are found
If treatment is needed, Dr Kevin will explain what is happening and talk you through the options before anything is carried out.
What Happens at a Young Child’s First Dental Visit?
For younger children, the first visit is often about helping them become familiar with the dentist rather than doing lots of treatment straight away.
We may start by simply talking with your child and parent, helping them feel comfortable in the room and encouraging them to open their mouth so Dr Kevin can have a gentle look at their teeth.
Having a parent close by can make the experience feel safer and more familiar.
These early visits help children get used to the dental chair, the people around them and the idea of having their teeth checked. Over time, this can help build confidence and make future dental visits much easier.
When Should My Child Start Seeing the Dentist?
It is helpful for children to begin dental visits early so they can become familiar with the environment and routine of a dental appointment.
Regular visits also allow us to monitor how their teeth are developing and identify problems before they become more difficult to manage.
What If My Child Is Nervous About the Dentist?
It is very common for children to feel unsure or nervous, especially if they have not been to the dentist before.
We take things at their pace and avoid rushing them. For some younger children, an appointment may simply involve sitting with a parent, opening their mouth for a quick look and becoming familiar with the dental environment.
Our goal is to build trust gradually so your child becomes more comfortable with each visit.
Why Are Regular Dental Check-Ups Important for Children?
Children’s teeth can change quickly as they grow.
Regular check-ups help us monitor:
* tooth decay
* brushing and oral hygiene
* gum health
* development of adult teeth
* spacing and bite
* habits that may affect the teeth
* areas that may need extra attention
Finding issues early can often mean simpler treatment.
Children’s Dental Benefits Schedule
Some eligible children may be able to access dental treatment through the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS).
CDBS can help cover eligible dental services for children who meet the government criteria.
If you are unsure whether your child is eligible, we can help you check before treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should my child see the dentist?
For most children, we recommend a dental check-up every 6 months.
Some children may need to be seen more frequently depending on their oral health, how quickly plaque builds up, their risk of tooth decay or whether there are concerns that need closer monitoring.
Does my child need X-rays at every visit?
No. X-rays are only taken when they are clinically required.
Dr Kevin will recommend them if they are needed to check areas that cannot be properly assessed by looking in the mouth alone.
What happens if my child needs a filling?
If decay is found, Dr Kevin will explain the problem and discuss the treatment needed.
We use tooth-coloured fillings and take a gentle approach to help make the experience as comfortable as possible.
Do you perform extractions for children?
Yes, when clinically appropriate. Sometimes a tooth may need to be removed because it cannot be saved, is causing ongoing problems or needs to come out for another dental reason.
Dr Kevin will explain why an extraction is being recommended and what to expect before treatment begins.
What if my child refuses to cooperate?
We do not force treatment.
If your child is very anxious or not ready, we may keep the visit simple and focus on helping them become more comfortable. Treatment can then be planned around what they are able to manage.
How much does children’s dentistry cost?
The cost depends on what your child needs at the appointment.
A routine check-up will cost less than an appointment that also requires X-rays, cleaning, fillings, extractions or other treatment.
We will explain any expected costs before treatment is carried out.
Eligible private health insurance claims can be processed through HICAPS, and some children may also be eligible for treatment through the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS).
